The second book in the River Dream series is titled, Dreams Change.It picks up after Michael returns from the Navy and enrolls in college. His relationship with Rhiannon, the love of his life, has seemed to end as she stays in Africa for work and we don't hear anything more about her. That is a shame because the charm of River Dream was based on that relationship.
As happens in life, Michael's life changes and along with it, he does too. To me he seems more detached from life and although he still has some good friends most aren't as close as they once were. Growing up does that to us.
In this story Michael meets Derrick, his roommate and becomes quick friends, all the while keeping secrets from him. He also gets reintroduced to Mauve, a girl from his past. While spending time in the library, a relationship develops between these two. With Rhiannon gone, Mauve and Michael embark on a quickly developing love affair. When she professes her undying love for him, Michael asks her to marry him. Of course, she accepts.
The story continues through their getting to know each other and Michael trying to make sense out of his new life. While I enjoyed the book there were a few times when I found my interest fading. The connection I had with the characters from the first book seemed to be gone. I just didn't feel the same for Mauve as I did for Rhiannon. I also felt different about Michael. His struggles, the way his life turned and the secrets he kept to himself all made this once innocent character darker somehow. Again, life does that to us.
All in all, I look forward to the third book in the series to see what becomes of Michael and his life.

While slightly geared toward a more adult audience than the first book, Dreams Change presents an interesting twist in the second book for the series.
It delves into how we change our lives and presents easy-to-relate-to situations and emotions associated with that change. Recommended for teenage years to adult, when young love can take the heart and run with it.
